FYI on Ethanol

From Petro-Canada Customer Service online:
Ethanol Blended Gasoline available in Ontario, supplied by all companies, contains a maximum of 10% ethanol. Only grade of gasoline that will not contain ethanol is Premium Octane 91 gasoline, as long as the site is not selling a 94 Octane grade. This level of ethanol is the standard addition rate throughout the petroleum industry. To avoid purchasing gasoline without 10% ethanol, one would have to purchase RegularClean 89 (contains 5% ethanol) or Super Clean 91 (contains 0% ethanol) at a Petro-Canada station that does not sell Ultra 94.

At Petro-Canada branded stations with Ultra 94 available, all grades of gasoline will contain ethanol. The Ethanol content in the gasoline is 10% maximum.

Other Ontario: Shell V-Power 91; Costco 91; Canadian Tire 91; Esso 91; Ultramar 91 are all ethanol-free gasoline.

The Problem: Ethanol alcohol is hygroscopic (attracts and absorbs moisture) and with our classics that are open to air vented carburetors and fuel tanks a simple high humidity day is more than enough to cause phase separation as we drive or let them sit.
Ethanol alcohol is a great solvent and cleaner that can dissolve engine parts (rubber, plastic, aluminum, and certain fiberglass tanks), dry out hoses, remove lubrication, and more. Engine seals and hoses shrink, swell, or lose strength when exposed to ethanol reformulated gasoline.
Ethanol is corrosive, damage to a carburetor is typical when phase separation occurs and the highly corrosive ethanol / water mixture corrodes fuel system components. From firsthand experience the older carburetors are often a pot metal casting (floor sweepings). The ethanol can and will cause an electrochemical action with corosion and eating of the casting.
High amounts of oxygen in ethanol blended fuels cause gasoline to decay faster, and if left standing for long periods of time, the decaying fuel leaves varnish and sludge deposits all the way throughout your fuel system. Gasoline will decay in as little as 60 days!

Test for Ethanol: just add a measured amount of water and shake ... ethanol and water will phase separate from the gasoline ... the increased amount of water + ethanol combined can be used to determine how much ethanol there is!!

Gasoline antifreeze (isopropyl alcohol based) may recombine water and ethanol back into the fuel mixture.

DO NOT USE ANY GAS or ADDITIVE THAT CONTAINS ETHANOL !!
